Sample letter to be sent on your letterhead to insurance agents in your community.
As aninsurance professional who deals with properties along the [name of waterway], you may receive questions about a new levee designation that [levee(s) name][is/are] receiving. These levees no longer meet federal standards for protection from a major flood.* When new flood hazard maps are issued, they will indicate that the levees no longer provide adequate protection. This means that your clients’ homes and business near the levee(s)are at a higher risk for flooding. When the new maps take effect,flood insurance will be required for mortgages from federally regulated or insured lenders.
There is a window of opportunity for residents and business owners to save money on their flood insurance before the new maps take effect. If they already have flood insurance policies in place, and maintain coverage, they can retain the ratesassociated with their current flood zones.
Until the new maps take effect, current effective flood hazard maps, designated risk levels and flood insurance requirements continue to apply. You may want to remind your customers that there is always some risk associated with levees, and that this is a good time to consider purchasing flood insurance.
*A flood with a 1percent chance of occurring in any given year, also known as the “100-year” flood.
